Trust, Transparency, and AI: The New Zealand Governance Imperative

Kiwis are engaging with AI in droves. Trust? That’s earned through governance. The One NZ AI Trust Report dropped this week and reveals that 77% of New Zealanders have interacted with AI-powered services in the past year, with 40% using tools like ChatGPT. Notably, 90% of individuals aged 18-34 are engaging with AI, highlighting a significant shift in how the younger workforce interacts with technology.

However, the report also points to a clear trust gap: 62% of Kiwis would stop using a company’s services if they had concerns about its AI use, and 67% are worried about the misuse of personal data.

This presents a pivotal opportunity for organisations to lead with transparency and robust governance.

But here’s the tension: trust isn’t keeping pace. The KPMG NZ AI Snapshot, published just weeks ago, reveals:
* Only 24% of New Zealanders have received any AI-related training.
* Just 36% feel confident using AI appropriately.
* And 73% believe organisations should be required to meet minimum standards of AI governance.
Trust is fragile, particularly around data, decision-making, and visibility.

This gap is your board’s strategic opportunity

🛡️ Governance Recommendations from One NZ AI Trust Report:

To build and maintain trust, the report recommends that businesses:
* Develop clear and actionable Responsible AI policies: Establish guidelines that define ethical AI use within your organisation.
* Implement robust data protection measures: Ensure that data privacy is a cornerstone of your AI initiatives.
* Provide transparent communication about AI use: Clearly inform customers and stakeholders about how AI is utilised.
* Ensure human oversight of AI systems: Maintain human involvement in AI decision-making processes to uphold accountability.

These align closely with the Institute of Directors in New Zealand advice - Boards must treat AI not just as tech, but as a governance issue, building capability at the top and ensuring oversight from strategy to execution.

💡 Turn Engagement Into Enablement

Your people are already leaning into AI. Don’t clamp down, train them, support them and guide them. With the right frameworks, governance becomes a growth accelerator, not just a safety net.

Are you leading AI in a way your customers will trust and your people can build on?

Because when boards govern AI well, trust follows, and so does performance. This isn’t about playing defence. It’s about unlocking competitive advantage.
